Privacy Policy

Grid Professor Grader ("the Add-in") is a Microsoft Excel add-in operated by Grid Professor LLC ("we," "us"). It lets an instructor turn an Excel workbook into a graded assignment and gives students instant, in-cell feedback on their work. This policy explains what the Add-in collects, why, and how it is handled. We only collect what the Add-in needs to grade assignments and to help instructors verify that work was done by the student.

Who uses the Add-in

The Add-in is used in an educational setting by two groups: instructors, who create and manage assignments and view results, and students, who complete assignments. Access is limited to accounts an instructor or administrator has authorized; the Add-in is not open to the general public.

Information we collect

When you sign in and use the Add-in, we collect:

• Account identity. When you sign in with Google, we receive your email address and display name from your Google account. We use these to identify you, to check that you are authorized to use the Add-in, and to attribute your work and scores to you. We do not receive your Google password.
• Assignment answers and scores. When you check an answer, the value in the designated answer cell is sent to our server, graded against the assignment's answer key, and recorded along with the resulting score. The answer key stays on the server and is not sent to your computer.
• Workbook activity within the assignment. While an assignment is open, the Add-in records activity in that workbook to help instructors verify authentic work. This includes edits and selections (event type, the cell address and worksheet, the value or formula entered, and timestamps) and periodic aggregate snapshots (counts of filled cells, formula cells, selection events, worksheets, and used rows and columns).
• Session and technical data. A session identifier and standard technical information needed to keep you signed in and to operate the service.

The Add-in records activity only for a workbook that is a recognized Grid Professor assignment. It does not read, log, or transmit the contents of your other, unrelated Excel files.

How we use the information

• To authenticate you and enforce authorized access.
• To grade answers and report scores to you and your instructor.
• To let instructors review activity and confirm that submitted work is a student's own.
• To operate, maintain, secure, and improve the service.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

How information is shared

Your identity, answers, scores, and assignment activity are visible to the instructor and administrators of the course or institution you are enrolled in. We use a small number of service providers to run the Add-in, and information is shared with them only to provide the service:

• Google — sign-in (OAuth) identity verification.
• Cloud hosting and database providers — to host the application and store the data described above.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or security of our users and the service.

Data retention

We keep account, assignment, activity, and score data for as long as needed to provide the service to an instructor and institution and to support academic-integrity review, after which it is deleted or anonymized. An instructor or institution may request deletion of their course data.

Your choices and rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of the personal information we hold about you by contacting us at the address below. If you are a student, some requests may be directed to your instructor or institution, who administers your course data. You can stop all collection at any time by signing out of and removing the Add-in.

Security

Data is transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections and stored with access limited to authorized personnel and service providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Children's privacy

The Add-in is intended for use in higher-education and professional settings and is not directed to children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date above.
